[DE] Sie braucht es laut. Sie will Power. Und sie liebt Drama. Monika Döring, musikbesessene Ikone des Berliner Kulturlebens, hat sich im Mai 2024 in andere Sphären verabschiedet. Der letzte Tag der finalen Ausgabe von A L’ARME! wird zum großen Abschiedsfest und einer Würdigung von Dörings unschätzbarem Einfluss und ihrem eigensinnigen Geschmack. Zahlreiche ihrer Lieblings-Acts finden zusammen, um einen Musikabend ganz in ihrem Geiste zu gestalten. Laut, energetisch, voller Drama.
Geniale Dilletanten, Einstürzende Neubauten und Mythen, Monster, Mutationen – das waren zentrale Elemente in Monika Dörings Musikverständnis. An denselben Baustellen der Subkultur ist seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre auch Gudrun Gut aktiv. Nach ihrer Zeit als frühes Mitglied der Neubauten und Gründerin der Band Malaria! trägt die von ihr 1997 lancierte feministische Musikplattform nicht zufällig den Namen Monika Enterprise. Bei A L’ARME! präsentiert Gut ein Set mit elektronischen Klängen und ihrer unverwechselbaren Stimme.
Der unbändige Drang nach immer neuen, aufregenden Klängen führte Monika Döring unter anderem auch in die DDR. In den späten 80ern machte sie Bekanntschaft mit dem Avantgarde-Pop von AG Geige, besuchte Konzerte in Ostdeutschland und holte die Band auch nach Westberlin. Aus AG Geige entwickelte sich in den frühen 90ern eine Keimzelle für elektronische Musik: das Label raster, das nach wie vor maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die globale Techno-Szene hat. Frank Bretschneider und Olaf Bender stehen beispielhaft für diese Entwicklung und gehörten zu Monika Dörings Lieblings-Acts, ebenso wie eine jüngere raster-Generation mit Protagonist:innen wie Grischa Lichtenberger und Mieko Suzuki. Sie alle sind am Abschlussabend von A L’ARME! Vol. XII Finale mit ihren markanten Entwürfen elektronischer Musik zu hören.
Die Rockmusik gab Döring deswegen nicht auf – sofern sie kompromisslos in der Haltung und massiv im Sound ist, so wie die von Caspar Brötzmann. Er spielt als Hommage erstmals zusammen mit einer der jüngsten Festival-Entdeckungen: der E-Bassistin Farida Amadou. Für dieselbe geballte Energie wie dieses Improv-Rock-Duo steht – neben weiteren Acts des Abends – auch Keiji Haino, der eines seiner legendären Solosets performt. Purer Ausdruck zwischen Meditation, Ritual und Aufbruch ins Unbekannte. Die Veranstaltung wurde von ihrer langjährigen Freundin Karina Mertin kuratiert.
[EN] She likes it loud. She wants power. And she loves drama. Monika Döring, a music-obsessed icon of Berlin’s cultural scene, departed this earthly realm in May 2024. The last day of the final edition of A L’ARME! will be a massive farewell party and a celebration of her inestimable influence and her unmistakable style. We will be bringing together many of her favorite acts for an evening of music dedicated to Monika, just the way she would have wanted it. Loud, energetic, and full of drama.
Geniale Dilletanten; Einstürzende Neubauten; Mythen, Monster, Mutationen – these were the cornerstones of Monika Döring’s understanding of music. Gudrun Gut has also been an active member of this same subculture since the early 1980s. After her time as an early member of Einstürzende Neubauten and founder of the band Malaria!, it’s no coincidence that the name of the feminist music platform she launched in 1997 is called Monika Enterprise. At A L’ARME!, Gut will perform a solo set with electronic sounds and her unmistakable voice.
The irrepressible urge to discover new, exciting sounds led Monika Döring to the GDR, among other places. In the late 1980s, she discovered the avant garde pop of AG Geige, attended their concerts in East Germany, and brought the band to West Berlin. In the early 1990s, AG Geige evolved into a nucleus for electronic music: raster, a label that continues to have a major influence on the global techno scene to this day. Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender are two figures who represent this development and were also some of Monika Döring’s favorite acts, along with a younger generation of raster artists, including luminaries such as Grischa Lichtenberger and Mieko Suzuki. All of these artists will be performing on the final evening of A L’ARME! Vol. XII Finale with their striking interpretations of electronic music.
However, this doesn’t mean Döring gave up on rock – just as long as it had a relentless attitude and massive sound, like the music of Caspar Brötzmann, for example. As a tribute, he will be performing for the first time with one of the festival’s latest discoveries: electronic bass player Farida Amadou. Along with the other artists, Keiji Haino, who will be performing one of his legendary solo sets this evening, will also represent this intense, concentrated energy. Pure expression somewhere between meditation, ritual, and a departure into the unknown. The event has been curated by her longtime friend Karina Mertin.
